Deep Dives And Reactions: Autumn Variations by Ed Sheeran (Part One).

Hey y'all! Today I'm reacting to Ed Sheeran's newest album, Autumn Variations! This reaction is probably going to be split into several parts because there's several versions of this record and that's a lot to get to in one post!

I've heard some of Plastic Bag and American Town, and I'm claiming Spring.

    Okay, let's get started!

    Magical:

    Lyric Video:

This is pretty, has that classic "Sheeran" sound and the lyrics are 10/10 as we've come to expect, at least I have! THIS GUY IS LITERALLY UNABLE TO WRITE A BAD SONG!

    (Fan Created Music Video) [Ireland]:

Okay, the whole idea of a fan music video is awesome, but OH MY GOSH THIS IS THE CUTEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!!!! Like I love when Music Videos have definite plots and this one more than does! I mean two kids in theater class and then in the play as Romeo and Juliet but also in love? As a former theater kid, MY HEART CAN'T TAKE THIS!!! 10/10 on both.

    England:

   Lyric Video:

Okay, so just a comment: as well as I can tell the Lyric Videos have the same pop-in (well actually fade-in/fade-out) graphics just in different orders. I love how Ed writes songs about the most mundane things like "the pub with the flag that's working flexible hours" (that's a genius lyric too)! Seriously, sometimes people act like you have to be constantly on vacation to enjoy life, especially *cough cough* famous people. It's good to hear someone normalizing simple pleasures. I've never been to England, but I can figure that "this is England", it's just the way he describes.

    (Fan Created Music Video) [UK]:

This one was really good too, but less plot-driven and more just random shots of England. Oh, and elderly people telling stories, which has a beauty in itself. 10/10 for Lyric Video, 9/10 for Music Video.

    Amazing:

    Lyric Video:

This is relatable, sadly... But sometimes, when "Amazing" is unobtainable, "alright" is okay I suppose. Ed never minces words, which is empowering for people like me, because I don't either and sometimes feel like people would rather me not. According to the Constitution, I (and anyone else) can say literally whatever the heck they want and there's some incredible beauty in that!

    (Fan Created Music Video) [Australia]:

This whole video is literally about every person who side-eyes you for who and what you are and not caring and just being yourself anyway. There's a strange beauty in doing that, I wish I could (but someday I might). 10/10 for the Lyric Video, 9/10 for the Music Video.

   Plastic Bag (Clean Version):

I've heard a bit of this live, and my first impression is "it sounds like Little Things by One Direction" which is absolutely fine, as he wrote both of the songs (we're gonna ignore that VERY off the wall and *possibly* satirical Short I saw accusing him of stealing from One Direction who didn't even write the song [and of course he did]. I mean get your facts together, man)! Also, random but after the song finished playing, my autoplay thingy skipped to No Control by 1D before I could move, so that's fun... (Quite a paradox if you know what I mean)... 1/10.

   Blue:

   Lyric Video:

Before I could get back to the album, YouTube's brand new (and quite annoying) mix maker thing started playing Galway Girl, which I'm actually not mad, about because I love it, but I almost had a heart attack when No Control started. But now we're back on track, back at the album... Let's listen. This is beautiful and sad at the same time. It reminds me a lot of a long period of losing, mourning, forgiving and forgetting (currently still doing that, yeah). It's only Blue...

   (Fan Created Music Video) [Netherlands]:

Ooh, it's animated and beautiful! Friendship breakups hurt the worst. 10/10 on both.

    American Town:

   Lyric Video:

Oh, this is cute! This may be my favorite! I love love songs like this, so specific and whatever!

   (Fan Created Music Video) [USA):

This is cute and the fact that it's a true story is awesome. I love the simplicity or it, it's absolutely beautiful. 10/10 for the Lyric Video, 9/10 for the Music Video.

(A Clean Version for That's On Me doesn't exist, so we're just skipping it. Now on to) Page:

   Lyric Video:

This is kinda pretty... 2/10.

   Midnight:

   Lyric Video:

This is really pretty. No one writes love songs like Ed Sheeran. The production is nice too. Again, it's very deliberate and specific. The best lyric by far is "I have moments when I doubt myself but feeling low should still be felt".

   (Fan Created Music Video) [Japan]:

This one is really sweet too, I love it! I know I've said that a lot but it's true! 10/10 on both.

   Spring:

   Lyric Video:

It's claim o'clock! I think I picked well, this is a really pretty one and the fact that it's Spring where I live now, and I understand every word of this like in the metaphorical way. I know how it is, when everything is going wrong, to just sit back and wait for time to heal it. Best lyric is: "Oh, what a state we're in", that just sounds so perfectly British, old fashioned and so perfectly me!

   (Fan Created Music Video) [France]:

I love how the whole story is from the point-of-view of an Autumn Variations vinyl! It's the simplest of the videos I've seen, but it's absolutely beautiful! 10/10 on both.

   Punchline:

   Lyric Video:

This is beautiful, and also sad. Goodness, the bridge is great!

(Fan Created Music Video) [New Zealand):

This isn't a Music Video, it's a mini-movie! As an aspiring animator who can barely draw (I'm getting slightly better day by day, like I can tell when I look at my old stuff), this is beautiful! I love Indie Animation with every fiber of my being! (If you know me, you know if asked I could give you a list of great Indie-Mation)! 10/10 on both!

   When Will I Be Alright:

   Lyric Video:

This one ain't bad at all, it ain't over-the-top fabulous neither. The Fiddle is a  nice touch, really adds that extra oomph to it. The other notable uses of Fiddles in Ed Sheeran's music have been "Nancy Mulligan" and "Galway Girl". And I suppose this is oversharing but it seems like every time I hear Galway Girl I start freezing because the first time I ever listened to it it was on the 20 somethingth of September 2022 and I've listened to it way too many times while freezing that following Fall/Winter. That Winter's playlist was Galway Girl, several other Ed songs and a bunch of Louis Tomlinson stuff (lest we forget the release of the phenomenal record, Faith In The Future). It was my own personal British Invasion haha...

   (Fan Created Music Video) [Taiwan):

This is nice reminds me of the random crud my depressed, insomniac mind goes through. Especially how momentary happiness fixes stuff and then it goes away and there's this void. 9/10 on both.

Clean Version for The Day I Was Born doesn't exist, so again, we skippin' and going' on to)

  Head ▷Heels

   Lyric Video:

Another love song, a beautiful one at that. Having been deep in the inner circles of the Sheerio (no one says that anymore, I'm well aware) fandom for the last three album releases, this very well describes my journey into the fold of the fandom.

   (Fan Created Music Video) [India]:

This is my least favorite of the videos, it just feels like some sort of nightmarish video game glitch. Also I knew from the first frame that the people were made by use of AI software. I mean it was too obvious to lie about, which luckily they didn't try and admitted that they made it while playing with AI. Don't get me wrong, I occasionally use AI for concept art, semi-realistic pictures of people for faceclaims in fanfics when I can't find a stock photo that suits me or occasionally I just want a laugh. It's not something, at least in it's current state, that is, that should be taken seriously. 9/10 on the song, 0/10 on the video.

 Alrighty:

We've made it to the bottom of the post. This has been a long haul between finding time to do this, running a teeny tiny little social life and writing and editing several different books. The total all together is 171.  Music only is 101. Lemme add that to my album chart of 2024 right quick and well, considering I've only listened to three new albums, 101 doesn't look like a bad number. We'll see how it pans out though in December after I've hopefully finished last year's roster and this year's roster. Last year, *shudder*, I just wasn't with it at all...
That'll be a wrap, see y'all all later! -Ally. 😎
